The Ten Precepts:( A Jewbu rabbi’s Translation of the 10 Commandments —by Rabbi Ben Newman, roughly based on Thich Nhat Hanh’s Mindfulness Trainings):

1) I am…

Awareness is the Fundamental Essence that Permeates all Reality which brought you out of the narrow places of suffering which stem from being enslaved to dualism.

2) No Graven Images…

Don’t allow any other power, thing, or being to have power over you.

Don’t create an image in your consciousness that anything in the material or ethereal realm is permanent and lasting and substantive. Don’t be subservient or serve in any way any such image, for Awareness is the fundamental essence that permeates all reality, and will zealously visit the consequences of negative actions, speech and emotions such as anger of parents on children and on their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

However, it will also create love without limits to thousands for those who cultivate positive emotions such as love and ethical action.

3) Don’t swear falsely…

Don’t make empty promises or give your word when you don’t intend to keep it lest these empty words come back to you to harm you. Before you speak let your words pass through three gates: 1) Is it true? 2) Is it necessary? 3) Is it kind?

4) Remember to Rest…

Remember to take one day out of every seven to rest in the present moment. Work for six days doing all your acts of creation. However, the seventh day should be a day of Rest dedicated to the Present, the Fundamental Essence that Permeates all Reality. On it you should not do any manner of work, and you should encourage those under your care to do the same-- your family and anyone who resides in your house. For the Fundamental Essence gives rise to the earthly and the ethereal--the sea of all reality for six days, but rests on the seventh day. This is how Being blesses the Day of Rest, and sets it apart.

5) Honor your ancestors…

It is very important to honor our ancestors by making a connection with them and the future generations.  Always feel that you are the continuation of your ancestors. Every day practice touching your ancestors, and particularly your parents, both blood parents and spiritual parents. You realize that your ancestors are always alive in you because you are the continuation of your ancestors. Strive to emulate the constructive positive qualities of your ancestors and avoid their negative destructive qualities.

6) Don’t murder…

Aware of the suffering caused by the destruction of life, be committed to cultivating the insight of interconnection and compassion and learning ways to protect the lives of people, animals, plants, and minerals. Be determined not to kill, not to let others kill, and not to support any act of killing in the world, in your thinking, or in your way of life.

7) Don’t commit sexual misconduct…

Aware of the suffering caused by sexual misconduct, be committed to cultivating responsibility and learning ways to protect the safety and integrity of individuals, couples, families, and society.

8) Don’t steal…

Be determined not to steal and not to possess anything that should belong to others; and share your time, energy, and material resources with those who are in need.

9) Have loving speech…

Aware of the suffering caused by unmindful speech and the inability to listen to others, be committed to cultivating loving speech and compassionate listening in order to relieve suffering and to promote reconciliation and peace in your self and among other people, ethnic and religious groups, and nations. Knowing that words can create happiness or suffering, be committed to speaking truthfully using words that inspire confidence, joy, and hope. When anger is manifesting in you, be determined not to speak.

10) Don’t covet…

Don’t be stuck in your jealousy, craving,  grasping and consumption. Be aware that real happiness depends primarily on your mental attitude and not on external conditions, and that you can live happily in the present moment simply by remembering that you already have more than enough conditions to be happy.
